Me Time in Music - Irene Feher - Living Your Music

Living My Music Through Improvisation. I feel so lucky to be a music educator. I teach classical and contemporary voice at Concordia University in Montreal. I have access to these beautiful pianos. When I have a moment between lessons and emails, I love to improvise and make the piano sing. Piano is not my first instrument, but it is so much more than a teaching tool for me, it opens the doorway to a musical wonderland. Beginner's Mind

NOTE! I am NOT a jazz singer! This video is an example of how free improvisation helps us discover our unique musical story. I grew up hearing Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sammy David Jr., and Danny Kaye. My aunt, Annie Brooks, used to sing for me all the time in person or over the phone. This music is in my bones. Yes, it is rough and not refined, it would take years for me to become an accomplished jazz singer, I choose at this point in my life to do it purely for fun in my home, and with my improvising community. As a singer, I have found that exploring styles has developed my hearing and has helped me discover aspects of my voice that I never explored. When I sing popular music and classical art song, my voice feels more flexible. Self-Soothing Free Improvisation

Some days there is just so much to do! That's when I stop everything I'm doing, and sing. I do it sometimes when I have to transition from administrative work to teaching voice lessons. It helps me centre and drop into music. I purposely keep it simple. I let the ideas come out of nowhere. This is music that emerges purely from the heart. To know more go to: www.livingyourmusic.com

2 Improvisations March 29 2024

I love to stop everything I'm doing and sit at the piano to improvise. In this improvisation, I close my eyes, create shapes with my hands and let them fall wherever on the piano. I am singing in a more classical idiom. Emphasis is placed on intention - what am I feeling at this moment. What was I feeling? A longing for a full day off without any work or responsibility!
