Cymatics is the study of visible sound and vibration, typically observed by placing a substance like sand or water on a surface that is vibrated at different frequencies. The patterns that emerge are known as Chladni figures or cymatic patterns. These moving patterns visually represent the way sound waves interact with matter. Those in the field of cymatics explore the connection between sound and physical form.

If you want to know more, here is a wonderful short Ted Talk by Evan Grant on the subject with stunning visual examples: Making Sound Visible Through Cymatics

I think a lot about cymatics when I perform a sound bath, facilitate an improvisation workshop, lead community drumming, or teach a voice lesson. If sound has this effect on matter, imagine how much good we do for ourselves and others when we play live music, generating and surrounding ourselves by our naturally created sounds. Add intention into the mix and wowza! This is a recipe for thriving.

Improvisation in Words!

Next week I turn 60! It’s so hard to believe. I generated this little poem while meditating this morning!

What’s the rush?

Savour time

It’s all mine

Just Look around

All I need is right here

Lost and found

A joyous sound

Two people touching hands palm to palm, in a room with mirrors and a blue clock. One wears a red top and watch, the other glasses and earrings, appearing serene.
